The majority of days in my hometown are quiet, with little going on. If you get out in the afternoon, it's usually off to the DQ where the afternoon coffee drinkers meet; not to drink coffee especially, but to catch up on the day's gossip.
"Oh, have you heard....?'
"Did you hear that.....?
"I don't want to start rumors, but did you see.....?
"Guess who I saw with.....!"
And, on and on!
This is what living in a small town is like; you make your own entertainment. There are no movie theatres, no shopping malls, no Starbucks, not even a Wal-Mart! (But we DO have a Dollar General!)
The major part of our town's population is aging....middle age (45-60), senior citizen age(61-76), and then the 77+. These are my own contrived figures because I had to fit myself and hubs in the same group (67 and 74)!
The past couple of weeks have been sad. We have lost three of the 77+ group. These little people that we're losing are the "wisdom" of our town. They are the ones that have been there, done that! They are the ones who are so willing to share their experiences and knowledge. They are the ones that uphold and support the younger generation in times of trouble and turmoil. With each passing, the loss can be felt.
There is a new-comer in our town. Well...he's really not a new-comer. He's just "coming home" after many years of being away. He's in the senior cit group. We dropped by his house this afternoon to check on his moving progress...which hasn't progressed a great lot for he's waiting on carpet layers. B is a Jack-of-all-Trades and can do many things. I made the comment that he would never be through; that he would always be planning and making changes; doing and re-doing. His reply was "Well...isn't that what God does?"
I have to admit, that is exactly what God does. He's always planning and making changes for us, making things better. Even in the loss of our little people, there is a plan for the loved ones left behind. Even in the mess the world is in, He's "doing and re-doing". It's up to us to sit it out wait upon Him to see what changes He has wrought!
