Upon awakening early this morning, the sky was overcast and sparkling drops of water were sitting on the driveway and in the streets where they had fallen in the early hours of morning. I started the coffee , cranked up the old computer and quickly sent a good morning message to friends:
“Y'all have a good day. Looks like we might get a little rain in a few minutes. I'll let you know…”
Well…as it turned out, the rain turned into wind and sand. We have experienced a good old fashioned sandstorm. Those of you from the area know what I’m talking about.
Wind…whistling through and around windows. Wind and blowing sand that makes the atmosphere look like its carrying powdered chocolate through the air. Wind that makes your hair stand on end. And, if you dare open your mouth…sand gets between your teeth. Wind that whips the covers of the dumpsters up and down. Sand…that seeps in the house, settling on my pine floors and covering the furniture. Wind that whips all kinds of stuff through the air and settling in trees and shrubbery.
With all the unpleasantness of this unruly weather, I’ve been reminded of a phrase in a hymn that I’ve sung ever since childhood…
"The winds and the waves shall obey My will, Peace be still! Peace be still!"
So…through the ravages of wind, sand, water

God Bless until next time.

Away out here they got a name
For rain and wind and fire
The rain is Tess, the fire Joe,
And they call the wind Maria
Maria blows the stars around
And sends the clouds a’flyin’
Maria makes the mountains sound
Like folks were up there dying
Maria
Maria
They call the wind Maria
Before I knew Maria’s name
And heard her wail and whinin’
I had a girl and she had me
And the sun was always shinin’
But then one day I left my girl
I left her far behind me
And now I’m lost, so gone and lost
Not even God can find me
Maria
Maria
They call the wind Maria
Out here they got a name for rain
For wind and fire only
But when you’re lost and all alone
There ain’t no word but lonely
And I’m a lost and lonely man
Without a star to guide me
Maria blow my love to me
I need my girl beside me
Maria
Maria
They call the wind Maria
sand dawg
