a gentle whisper...

I’m faithless.

I’m really, really faithless.

There have been times that I’ve prayed for God to send strikes of lightning, writing on the wall, anything that would show a miraculous answer to solving problems and concerns in my life. I’ve lain awake at night, talking to God, and expectantly awaited to see His hand in a flash of light writing on the wall.

Now, that’s what I call f.a.i.t.h.!!

Well…that’s a laugh.

I am in the midst of a Bible Study; a 36 week study of which we’re on week 9. This morning, very early, I got out my book and began to read the required scripture for the next lesson.

The scripture from 1 Kings 19 is about the flight of Elijah to Horeb. Elijah traveled 40 days and 40 nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God. He went into a cave and spent the night.

1 Kings 19:11-13 (New International Version)

11 The LORD said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by.”

Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake.

12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.

So.

Where was God? In the wind? In the earthquake? In the fire?

He came to Elijah in a gentle whisper.

That’s where I’ve been faithless; always expecting Him to appear in a climatic vision.

Maybe I should be listening for a gentle whisper. Maybe this is real faith.

A gentle whisper.

I want one, too.

For someone who is faithless ... it sounds like you have a lot more faith than me.

The story of Elijah has always amazed me! A man who could call fire down from heaven, change the weather with prayer, had hundreds of Baal priests put to death and had seen with his own two eyes the power of God ... ran when problems came his way ... feeling sorry for himself and all alone because he was "the only one left".

But then I read James 5 and see that he was a "man just like" me ... I do the same thing, overlooking all the things God has done in MY LIFE.

As usual In-Spired ... a great post!

Sometimes HIS whispers are as loud as the Niagra, huh?

Years ago, I used to go to Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin, almost daily in the summer. The attraction was the rope swing at Stuart Park. Of all the places I've ever gone swimming, I've swam more in Stuart Park than any other place.

I never knew it was a biblical name. They play up the Norway theme, lot's of carved trolls decorate the downtown. Many town residents can trace their lineage back to Norway. To this day, it's a very nice little town, located in western Dane County, Wisconsin.
