Take Time To Be A Reader!

Each year in May, right before school dismisses for the summer, the Munday chapter of T.E.E.A. has a book drive for Head Start. For those of you who aren’t familiar with T.E.E.A., it is the organization that our mothers and grandmothers were members of, known as the Home Demonstration Club….same organization, different name. The mission of Texas Extension Education Association is to strengthen individuals and families through:
- Continuing Education
- Leadership Development and Community Service.

The book drive for Head Start is just one of the community service projects that is done. Each member of the local club donates children’s books to be distributed to the children of Head Start. Volunteers from the club deliver the books and spend some time reading to the children. It’s a rewarding time, both for the readers and the children. The employees of the Head Start divide the books and each child gets to carry a couple of new books home with them to enjoy over the summer.

Yesterday (Wednesday) was the designated day. There were three volunteers from the club to meet with the children. It proved to be an enjoyable hour! This is just a part of living and being active in my Hometown. Volunteerism is what keeps small towns alive!

The children are always so uninhibited and friendly. They're squirmy and talkative but they love being read to! It is such a joy to see and hear what they've learned throughout the year. Even as a retired teacher, I'm continually astounded by the knowledge that these children have stored up in their little brains!

This little fellow is just the cutest thing! He had been just a little bit 'too talkative' and his teacher put him over by himself. He looked like he was mulling over his situation when this picture was taken.

Some of these children will be going into Kindergarten in the fall. They already have a good academic basis for their age. My prayer is that God will care for them through the summer and keep them safe. I pray God's blessings on the families of each of them.

What a rewarding thing to do! I've heard you talk about this organization, but I don't know much about it.
