Dr. Al Speaks

For the past month, hubby and I have been 'under the weather', first with one thing and then another. We've always been very healthy and haven't had a lot of sickness so it's a new experience for us to be tied to the house for so long.

Our funny and philosophical son-in-law keeps in touch with us on a daily basis. He's a farmer and is 'out' more than he is 'in', carries a cell phone on his body and has one installed in his pick-up so he is accessible at all times. He has called us many times while out moving equipment, changing water, or doing whatever it is that farmers do.

In his efforts to cheer us up, he has sent the following information on keeping healthy. It would benefit us all to follow the 'health rules'.

"The best six doctors anywhere
And no one can deny it
Are sunshine, water, rest,
and airExercise and diet.
These six will gladly you attend
If only you are willing
Your mind they'll ease
Your will they'll mend
And charge you not a shilling."
~Nursery rhyme quoted by Wayne Fields, What the River Knows, 1990

Live in rooms full of light. Avoid heavy food. Be moderate in the drinking of wine. Take massage, baths, exercise, and gymnastics. Fight insomnia with gentle rocking or the sound of running water. Change surroundings and take long journeys. Strictly avoid frightening ideas. Indulge in cheerful conversation and amusements. Listen to music.
~A. Cornelius Celsus

The I in illness is isolation, and the crucial letters in wellness are we.
~Author unknown, as quoted in Mimi Guarneri, The Heart Speaks: A Cardiologist Reveals the Secret Language of Healing

If I'd known I was going to live so long, I'd have taken better care of myself.
~Leon Eldred

He who takes medicine and neglects to diet wastes the skill of his doctors.
~Chinese Proverb

Those who think they have not time for bodily exercise will sooner or later have to find time for illness.
~Edward Stanley

If your dog is fat, you're not getting enough exercise.
~Author Unknown

Whenever I feel like exercise, I lie down until the feeling passes.
~Robert M. Hutchins ( I highlight this one because it will be the one hubby will follow!)
