The Porch

Nine years ago, when I was looking for the house I wanted here in my hometown, I had found one that I really liked except that it didn't have a front porch. I remembered the house having a huge front porch but through the years it had been updated and remodeled, and the porch was built-in for an extension to the living room. It had many other features that were desirable.

We made arrangements to drive down and meet with the owners on a Saturday. Early on Friday morning, hubby woke me up and said “Get up we're going to Munday to look at a house”

“Well, gosh, Mr. H! We've already looked at the house!!”

He informed me this was another house that he had seen for sale in the hometown paper that we had received the day before.

To make a long story short, we drove to Munday and as we were driving up the street toward the house, I saw “THE PORCH”!

To make a long story even shorter, by 5:00 that afternoon we had bought the porch! And, I mean that literally. It was the porch I bought, not the house!

Of late, the most interesting thing to watch on T.V. is the weather channel. This morning I was listening to one of the many stories that have been told about the Greenberg, Kansas tornado.

A woman was interviewed that had made her way back into town to check on her mom and dad's home. Most of the house was gone but the porch was still there. She told how the family had gathered on that porch often, drinking lemonade and eating popcorn and sharing stories. That porch had been so meaningful to their family.

That's how I feel about my porch! I hope that if our town is suddenly taken away by a tornado, that my porch remains standing. Maybe volunteer workers can find a place to rest and have a cool drink.
On The Front Porch
by Summer Magic
Three creaky wooden stairs
Those squeaky rocking chairs
The well worn welcome mat
The lattice vines
The happy times
All I want to do
When the day is through
Is linger here on the front porch With you.
From the wicker swing
While the night birds sing
We'll watch the fireflies sparkin'
Do some sparkin' too.
How the hours fly
As the moon drifts by --
How sweet the air
As we stare
At the sight.
Oh! How I love to linger here like this
Hold your hand, and steal a kiss
Or two
On the front porch with you
All I want to do
When the day is through
Is linger here on the front porch With you
From the wicker swing
While the night birds sing
We'll watch the fireflies sparkin'
Do some sparkin' too(Some sparkin' too!)
How the hours fly
As the moon drifts by --
How sweet the air
As we stare
At the sight
Oh! How I love to linger here like this
Hold your hand, and steal a kiss Or two
On the front porch with you.

I love the porch! This reminds me of the house we had when I was growing up. We had so much fun swinging and playing on that giant porch! I am jealous....our porch is PITIFUL! :)
